Nonprofits and Helping the Community

I have always enjoyed volunteering and helping others out of the kindness of my heart. Recently, I decided I would like to try and work for a nonprofit organization, but what does that entail? I did some research and realized it is just like volunteering, but you get paid!

A nonprofit organization is a business that generates surplus revenues to continue the life of the business instead of using them for profits or dividends. Many companies are centered on a charity or service organization. What attracts me to this kind of company is the fact that they are solely functioning for the survival of the company and the service that they are providing. I like the family feel of these types of organizations.

My first encounter with a nonprofit organization was in 2007 when I first started volunteering at my step-mom’s company. She works for an NPO, Any Baby Can. They help families with sick children who can’t pay for their hospital bills. They are solely based on donations from the community to help these families get back on their feet and provide for their children. I volunteered there every summer for about three years, mainly office work: copies, organizing payroll checks, and filing. Over those three years, I saw families come and go and saw how much this company helped each and every family. Even though I know it is hard to keep an NPO sustained and alive, I just admire the type of work that they do every day and I want to be a part of that.

Getting Out There and Trying New Things...YIKES!

I recently read another blogger's post about the very thing that I am struggling with at the moment...finding my passion. The title of her post "The Secret to 'Finding Your Passion'" kind of tricked me into a false sense of security and made me think, hey I might actually find the answer! Unfortunately, I did not. The post was very enlightening and was all about going out of your comfort zone and trying different things to see if you like them. If you think your passion is being a teacher, then go out in front of a large group of people and test out your skills. Basically, you'll never know until you try.
After pondering about this challenge, I decided that it's about time I push myself out of my own comfort zone and really go look for something I'm passionate about. Not just look, but DO. I'll keep you updated on my progress, of course, and let you know if I suddenly become this enlightened new woman. Until then, let me know what you want to hear from me on this blog and if you enjoy where it's going so far!

It's Just the Beginning

Welcome to a brand new world of blogging! Even though I am young and fairly in tune with the social media world, I can confidently say that I have never written, seen, or read a blog in my life, but here is to new beginnings.
My name is Miranda and I am a 21 year old college student at the University of Central Florida. I'm currently in my final year, hoping to receive my degree in Business Administration with a minor in Communication by the Fall semester of 2014...fingers crossed! I have found that even though I am on this straight path towards my future in business, I am still very lost and confused as to where I want to take it exactly. That's where this blog will come in handy. I plan to use this as a stepping stone towards finding what I am passionate about and where I want to take my career in general. I will be posting about new things that I'm learning in school, how that applies to my life as a budding business professional, and also any professional accomplishments or milestones that I may achieve in the next ten weeks.
So strap in and get ready to ride with me on my journey to success, because it is just the beginning!
